Giving Back: Becoming a Miner Mentor
The UTEP Alumni Mentoring Program is designed to provide our students with an opportunity to develop and enhance their awareness of professionalism in the workplace, employer expectations and behaviors that lead to career success. We strongly believe that a mentoring relationship can build confidence and motivate our students to prepare for a successful transition into their careers. The program will create professional relationships between graduating UTEP seniors and UTEP alumni, who will serve as a resource for students as they prepare to enter the workforce. Our students will be paired with alumni mentors who are currently working in the students’ chosen field, while also considering several other factors for a successful match. The program is designed to be flexible, allowing for students and their mentors to decide what arrangement works best for their schedules. We anticipate that much of the mentoring will happen electronically and over the phone, though opportunities for in-person interaction are built into the program. Monthly discussion topics and Senior Year Check-in events will anchor the program while allowing for each relationship to address school or career concerns specific to each student. Mentors and mentees will go through training to learn how to bring the most value to their role, and UTEP staff will be available for guidance and advice throughout the duration of the program. As always, we are happy to answer any questions you may have. Just call the Office of Alumni Relations at 915-747-8600. We look forward to hearing from you.
Career Corner
Greetings from the University Career Center
As we all know, the job market has been very tough, and if you’re unemployed or underemployed, it’s easy to get discouraged. With this in mind, I want to share a few thoughts with you: A recent survey of employers nationwide by the National Association of Colleges and Employers reveals projections of a 10% increase in hiring for this year’s grads over those who graduated last year. This can be seen as a reflection of all hiring. Things are slowly turning around. Remain as positive as you can during your job search. Be confident that something will come, if you do all the right things. Network, network, network! Tell everyone you know that you’re looking for a job. Spread your job search over time. Do a little something every day or every few days. If you do it all at once, you leave yourself with nothing to do, but wait; stay busy. When you make contact with an employer, give it a little time, then follow up. Be persistent. Let them know you are interested. Any personal contact you can make (rather than by email or phone) can be much to your advantage when you present a professional image. Dazzle them with your footwork! Be prepared to take something less than you had hoped for, and allow yourself the time to continue your search for that perfect job. Remember that a career is a lifelong adventure. It’s easy to get impatient when you’re looking for work. What may seem like an eternity may be a speck in time; maintain your perspective.
