MEET A MINER: Alejandra Prieto Moreno

1. Can you share a bit about your background and upbringing in Mexico?
My name is Alejandra Prieto, I graduated with a Master of Accountancy this past May, and I am working towards getting my license to become a Certified Public Accountant. I grew up in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, as the second of five siblings. My parents worked tirelessly to ensure that my siblings and I received the best education possible. They instilled in us the belief that the only limits are the ones we set for ourselves and that with determination, we can achieve anything we set our minds to.
2. What motivated you to attend UTEP?
Several factors made UTEP the perfect choice for me. The quality of education, the vast opportunities available, the support offered to Mexican students, and its affordability were all crucial in my decision. Additionally, the strong sense of community at UTEP made it feel like the right place to pursue my education.
3. What advice would you give to other Mexican students considering studying at UTEP?
It's natural to be scared of the unknown, but don't let that fear stop you from pursuing your dreams. UTEP has many opportunities to enhance your college experience and prepare you for life after graduation. You belong here, and you are capable of achieving excellence.
4. Looking back, what has been the most memorable part of your journey as a student/alumna at UTEP?
One of the most memorable parts of my journey was being part of the student organization Miners Against Hunger (MAH). Serving as President for two of the four years I was involved, we organized events to raise awareness about food insecurity and participated in community service. Seeing the organization grow and knowing that the legacy continued after I graduated was incredibly rewarding.
5. Was there a staff or faculty member who made a significant impact on your UTEP experience? Can you tell us a little bit about that?
Professor Sarah Robertson, who teaches Taxation, made a significant impact on my UTEP experience. She has been an exceptional teacher and mentor throughout both my undergraduate and graduate education. Her dedication to her students is evident, and she is highly respected by every accounting student. Another influential figure was Dr. Eva Moya, the Faculty Advisor for MAH. Her commitment to combating food insecurity was truly inspiring and instrumental in guiding our organization to fulfill its mission.
6. Was there a friend or family member who made a significant impact on your educational journey? Can you tell us a little bit about that?
My parents have been the most significant influence on my educational journey. Their tireless work and unwavering support motivated me to pursue higher education and strive for excellence. Their belief in my abilities has always pushed me to aim higher and overcome any challenges.
7. Any recommendations for things to do in Mexico? Favorite sites, restaurants, activities?
Chihuahua has so much to offer, from its beautiful natural landscapes to its rich cultural heritage. If you ever visit, I recommend exploring Cascada de Basaseachi, Cooper Canyon, the Arquelogical zone of Paquime, and the Sierra Tarahumara, enjoying the local cuisine—especially the traditional gorditas and montados—and visiting the historical sites in the city. It's a place full of warmth and history that I always cherish.
8. Do you have an Instagram or social handle you would like others to follow?
I recommend connecting with organizations like Miners Against Hunger on social media to stay informed about how students can get involved in meaningful community service. Their Instagram is @utepmah.
9. Is there something specific to your cultural upbringing or background that is particularly special to you?
The sense of community and family is something deeply ingrained in me from my upbringing in Mexico. Growing up, I learned the importance of supporting one another and working together towards common goals. As well as working relentlessly and being impeccable even with the little things. This sense of doing things with ethics, perseverance, and discipline is something I carry with me in all aspects of my life, especially in my educational and professional endeavors.
